How to identify a purple wildflower

Color is memorable, but many unrelated wildflowers produce purple blooms. Stronger identification clues include the number and symmetry of the petals, whether flowers appear singly or in clusters, the shape and arrangement of the leaves, and whether the stem is round, square, smooth, or hairy.

Replay the video and pause on the flower center and the point where leaves join the stem. Notice whether leaves are opposite, alternate, or arranged in a basal rosette. Record the habitat—woodland edge, meadow, wet ground, roadside, or garden—and the month in which the plant was flowering.

Those details can separate several similar-looking asters, mints, vervains, and cultivated escapees. Avoid picking a rare or protected plant simply to identify it. Press play, make a short list of observable traits, and compare them with a regional flora or a local native-plant resource.

New Jersey Viewers

Explore New Jersey nature in close-up

New Jersey includes Appalachian ridges, Highlands reservoirs, Piedmont river corridors, the distinctive Pine Barrens, vast tidal marshes, and an Atlantic barrier coast. Dense development sits beside nationally important migration and wetland habitat.

From Newark, Trenton, Cape May, and communities from the Highlands to the Shore, viewers can use this guide to compare local habitats, seasons, and field marks with original WhatsTheZoom videos. A useful identification starts with where and when an observation was made—not simply what color it appeared on camera.

Habitats and wildlife clues to watch

  • Explore Highlands forest and streams for fungi, flowers, and insects.
  • Study Pine Barrens plants in place without collecting rare species.
  • Watch Meadowlands and coastal marshes from overlooks and boardwalks.
  • Observe Cape May migration and dune life without crossing protected areas.

When to look closely in New Jersey

Spring and autumn migration are major coastal events. Summer favors wetlands, pollinators, and spiders, while heat encourages early visits. Autumn also brings fungi and seeds; winter can be excellent for coastal birds, tracks, evergreen plants, and shoreline patterns.

For a stronger identification, record the date, broad location, habitat, approximate size, behavior, and several viewing angles. Avoid handling unknown fungi, plants, insects, or wildlife, and follow current local access and safety guidance.
